Year 11 Careers Assemblies (Nov-Dec 2019)

Throughout this half term year 11 will have the opportunity to hear from a number of our parents about a wide of careers.

Every Thursday two assemblies will run simultaneously, with two presenters in each venue.

Students will be given the choice of which assembly to attend each week.

We have over twenty parents delivering a short presentation about their careers over the next six weeks.

A huge thanks must go out to all of our parent volunteers who have/will be giving up their time to support the school in such an important way.

July 2019 – STEM TfL Innovative Challenge

TfL Innovation Challenge – By Tamar Schechter

Have you ever experienced a signal failure on the train? Daniella Khalastchi, Jake Taylor, Danny Berlin, Michael Wahnon, Aaron Bennis and myself took part in TfL’s innovate challenge 2019. Our idea was to reduce delays and costs associated with signal failures. This can be achieved by installing thermal imaging cameras and temperature sensors around the track letting control centres know the temperature and engineers would be able to fix problems before they cause delays. We created our own 5 minute video presentation about our innovation along with an advert and model and submitted this for the competition. Out of 61 entries our team came in the top 4 and were invited to the finals on the 4th March. We were privileged to be accompanied by Mrs Morris, Governor of Yavneh College, and thought it was very special of her to join us and show her support. As part of the final 4 we took part in a panel Q&A with 12 judges from TfL and their suppliers. Overall, the day was incredible and gave us the opportunity to network with so many TfL employees and managers. Sadly we didn’t win but we had a great day and gained so much from the experience.

Sixth Form STEM

On Wednesday 24^th September2019 we were delighted to welcome back Mr Andrew Hyman to the launch of the TfL Innovate Competition. As he explained the process and what the students needed to do in order to submit an entry, he was joined by four members of last year’s finalists who were on hand to offer advice and tips. There was certainly a great deal of interest in the room, however we will until February 2020 to know if this has materialised into any entries and any finalists. We wish the Year 12 students good luck with their ideas and entries!

STEM CAREER TALK – 18th September

On Wednesday 18th September we were delighted to welcome Joel Levitan, a Yavneh College alumnus, to give an inspirational talk on aerospace engineering and pilot studies. Everyone present was inspired not just by his academic course but also by the additional societies Joel is actively involved with. If anyone present hadn’t yet thought of this career path they almost certainly will be now! Joel’s answers to pupils questions were both insightful and helpful to everyone present.

Work Experience with TFL – July 2019

‘Our TfL journey began in October when we were initially introduced to the programme. This entailed coming up with an innovation to improve how TfL provide their services. We decided to increase the reliability of the railway network by reducing the delays caused by signal failures on the track- this idea got us to the finals. Although we didn’t win, we were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to complete two weeks of work experience within the company. Four of us spent time with engineers, learning about Crossrail 2 and signalling systems; the rest of us spent time in technology and data, creating an app to improve disabled access on buses.

Overall, we had an invaluable experience and gained a lot of useful skills and knowledge that will benefit us in the future world of work.’

Year 10 Trip to Cambridge – 17th July 2019

On July 17th fifteen aspiring year 10 students went to visit Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. The aim of the day was to give students a flavour of life at Oxbridge and to motivate students to consider whether or not they would like to apply to Oxbridge in year 12.

As well as a tour of the beautiful town and the college itself, students attended a lecture by the college’s liaison officer all about studying at Oxbridge and all it has to offer. This included getting the students to think about the sorts of things one needs to consider in order to apply.

The final activity of the day was a debate, using old Oxbridge interview questions for Economics and Philosophy, to demonstrate to students the sorts of skills required to excel in the unique type of learning environment Oxbridge offers.

ORT JUMP Graduation – 8th July 2019

ORT UK works with a variety of industries to help British students JUMP-start their careers through its innovative ORT JUMP schools’ programme. Students are being mentored in popular industries such as medicine, law, finance, engineering and psychology. ORT UK also match students in more unusual fields for example biochemistry, product app development and HM Treasury.

Held at JW3, the audience of over 250 guests, included graduates of the ORT-JUMP mentoring programme, their proud parents, teachers and the mentors, who volunteered their time over the past year to offer careers advice to their student mentees.

A huge Mazel Tov must go to Gabriella Ziff who won the (overall) Outstanding Achievement Award for the entire cohort. Gabriella won this award ahead of 250 other students who participated in the programme this year.

Under the Microscope: My Career in Genetics

On Tuesday 19^th March, Juliette Harris MSc PHD, very kindly gave up her time to come and speak to students from year 10-13.
As well as taking questions from students, Juliette spoke about her career path as well as the nature and challenges of her profession.

On Thursday 29^th November Stephanie Ryder came to speak to Year 10, Year 11 and Sixth Form students about her career as a Marine Engineer.

She spoke about her career path, qualifications, the nature and demands of a career in engineering as well as taking questions from students.

We are really grateful to Stephanie for giving up her time to come and speak to our students. It was a really interesting talk for our students, a number of whom are a considering Engineering as a potential career pathway. A summary of the talk can be viewed by clicking here.
