Chanukah 2021

Sixth Form students were involved in Chanukah celebrations and activities all week, from helping in both the YPS and YC Chanukah Fairs, magic shows, guest speakers and writing “Cards for Care”.

Visit from Oliver Dowden MP

Mr Oliver Dowden CBE MP came to speak to our Sixth Form today.

We were privileged to hear from Mr Dowden about his early career in politics as a local MP, his previous role as Secretary of State for Digital Culture, Media and Sport, as well as his current position of Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Mr Dowden then took questions from our Sixth Form students.

We are so grateful to Mr Dowden for giving up his time to come to speak to us today and it was a really fantastic event.

AJEX Parade 2021

On Sunday 21st November a number of Sixth Form students participated in the annual AJEX ceremony. The parade started at 13.30 at the Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. The students held a banner identifying the school and marched in honour and memory of all Jewish men and women who have served this country, and of the victims of the Holocaust. The parade also serves as an important reminder of the extraordinary service given to this country by British Jews since the 1750s and we are proud that Yavneh College students were a part of this event.

GIFT Volunteering for Mitzvah Day 2021

As part of Mitzvah Day this year Yavneh College sixth formers volunteered outside local shops encouraging shoppers to donate food to the Jewish food bank charity GIFT.

We had many students volunteering in different locations across Borehamwood and Radlett.

Members of staff from GIFT were amazed by the student’s attitude to helping others and commented what an enormous credit they were to the school.

Brain Dissection

As part of the A-level Psychology course, the students study a unit of biopsychology, which focusses on the brain. For the first time, we were lucky enough to do a brain dissection so that we could bring our learning to life! Thanks to Mrs Merrett who led the dissection, we all learned so much!

EPQ presentations (October 2021)

We had two of our Year 13 students complete their EPQ presentations today. The final part of the assessment is the presentation in front of a live audience. Both presentations were outstanding.

Ben Moont – “To create a VR game that is both engaging and immersive.”

Learn 2 Rescue – First Aid Training (October 2021)

Mr Daniel Morris visited the Year 12 assembly today to launch the “Learn 2 Rescue” programme for 2021-22.

Students have to opportunity to sign up for an accredited First Aid training course.

This will take place over the space of five after school sessions.

The final part of the qualification involves students demonstrating their own skills and learning through running First Aid training sessions for younger students. This will be done through our Enrichment programme in the summer term.

October – Year 13 visit to US Embassy

On 7th October Year 13 Politics students were able to visit the US embassy in Vauxhall, London.
As well as a tour of the building, students were lucky enough to spend about 30 minutes with the Mr Philip T Reeker (US ambassador), talking about his role and taking questions.
This was truly a privilege for our students and certainly will help in their study of American Politics.

Radio 5 Live Star talks to students

We were absolutely delighted to welcome BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Chris Warburton to Yavneh, Chris gave a fantastic talk to sixth form students. Over two hundred students attended the talk where we heard Chris give an in depth explanation of what it’s like to work in the media and at the BBC. Chris had some fantastic advice for the students and explained how his passion is what drove him to succeed in something he loves.

We had a long question and answer session with Chris who gave some excellent tips to students. We will be holding more talks with external speakers over the course of the year so please watch this space!

Introduction to applying to Oxbridge (Year 12)

Year 12 students considering applying to Oxbridge (2022-23) had the chance to speak to one of our alumni students (Talia Rabinowitz) who is currently studying Psychology at Oxford University. She spoke about the challenges of the application process and offered advice to our Year 12 students.
