Technology is now the most popular of all the optional subjects and about two-thirds of all Yavneh GCSE pupils have studied at least one of the subjects we offer. Technology and the related subjects are a very popular option for many in higher education too and our department offers a range of skills and understanding for so much in today’s work place and even more so for the future. Understanding two and three dimensional CAD/CAM applications, using industry standard tools like Photoshop and learning to convey important and complex messages visually and solving 3D problems will most certainly be invaluable assets to our pupils when they join the workforce.
From September 2017, all of the GCSE Technology subjects are changing. Resistant Materials and Graphics are becoming vocational subjects with the title of a Technical Award Level 2. Technical Awards equip learners with the practical, transferable skills and core knowledge they need to progress to further general or vocational study, including level 3 qualifications, employment or apprenticeships and are the equivalent of a GCSE. Systems and Control and Food Technology are remaining as GCSE subjects. With Year 8 and Year 9 pupils having completed their option choices and looking forward to the new arrangements, it is clear that exciting times lie ahead for KS4.
Our enrichments have continued to be popular with a wide choice on offer. Car enrichment has continued with enthusiastic pupils working on the various projects from early morning, lunchtimes and during the enrichment sessions. Projects completed in the last year have included quite a number of Freelander’s, as well as continuing work on the MGB BGT and the MGB Roadster/Range Rover Hybrid. In fact, if there appears to be a shortage of second-hand Freelander’s on the market it is because most of them are in Yavneh College. Several staff cars have also passed through the garages with various different problems being repaired by pupils under Mr Taylor’s supervision. We continue to run very popular enrichments in the big workshop, encompassing many of the skills that the pupils learn in the department, with a special focus on encouraging creative problem solving and making. Our technician, Mr Arnold has helped by developing a number of projects as a vehicle for this and the pupils make good use of his skills by seeking his assistance with their Tech Club projects. As always, the cooking enrichments are extremely popular and it is always pleasurable to be in the department with all the wonderful aromas wafting around during enrichment time.
In Food Technology we have revamped the cooking room, with a rearrangement of part of the layout as well as additions and renewal of the displays. This year we also took on a larger cohort from the previous year, increasing food tech to over 60 pupils, up from 40.
One of our main achievements for the year, was obviously to have been visited by HRH The Prince of Wales which was one of the highlights of the royal visit. He first visited our big workshop, where he was able to see a group of Year 9 pupils making toys for the local hospital. He was particularly impressed by the range of skills and materials on display and he was interested to see how the pupils interacted with the tools and how they expressed their creativity in the projects. A visit to the Food Technology room followed where he and his party observed a select group of our Year 10 and 11 pupils making bread, cakes and drinks for the local food bank.
Finally, please remember that we are always on the lookout for old unwanted tools and good solid wood. We particularly need to add to our rather depleted stock of hardwoods and if you have any suitable old furniture or timber we will happily arrange to pick it up.
Please see the flyer below for details of a forthcoming Referee Course HMH Football Club is facilitating in July:
A few Yavneh College pupils have previously qualified as Referees through the club they would be delighted to welcome more.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Yavneh College with lots of celebrations planned throughout the year.
The Gala Dinner that took place on 30th March at the Allianz Park was a tremendous success and we were honoured to welcome former Minister for Education, Mr Ed Balls as our Guest of Honour. Some 250 guests were entertained by our excellent school choir while reflecting on the first 10 years of Yavneh College and all our successes so far.
We were joined by previous Head Girls and Boys who helped organise the fund raising on the evening and it was particularly special to hear them talk about their memories of the school and all it gave to them.
Photographs from the event can be viewed below:
It has once again been a busy year for the PE Department as they continue to offer pupils a broad and balanced curriculum programme that not only develops physical skills, but also mental, social and personal skills. The Yavneh College extra-curricular and enrichment programme also continues to thrive and as always, pupils of all abilities are encouraged to get involved in some way.
Here are just a few of the highlights:
Intra School Competitions
The autumn term has seen the start of the Intra School Sports Fixtures for 2016/17. Intra school competitions are those competitions that take place within the school with pupils and houses competing against each other. Along with the individual competitions, there are five houses competing throughout the year to earn points towards the House Cup. The first competition was a Table Tennis League that took place during lunchtimes for pupils from Y7 all the way through to Y11.
Further competitions are planned throughout the term and include sports hall athletics, rugby and basketball along with the grand finale of Sports Day on the 10th July.
The annual Yavneh College Sports Day for 2016 took place on Tuesday 12th July at Yavneh College, and followed a now familiar multi-sport format. Despite the forecast of wet weather, the day started brightly and all pupils took part in a range of different sports that included track and field athletics, football, cricket, netball, tag rugby, volleyball and rounders.
Involvement in competitive sport has been reported to have several, wide ranging mental, social and physical benefits, therefore all pupils were encouraged to take part in as many as possible of the sports activities on sports day and contribute to the achievements of the House that they were representing.
Sports Day was a tightly fought competition and the pupils responded in an excellent manner to both the enjoyment and participation element along with the competitive element.
There were many individually outstanding performances, but the true highlight was seeing so many pupils enjoying participation in sport and physical activity and the many pupils that showed real determination and resilience to perform at their own personal best in the events that they chose. Even as the rain came down, many pupils showed their resilience and determination to finish their events to the best of their ability.
The House Sports Day trophy was presented to the winning house by Mr Lewis. And the winner was………………………Shalva House!! Well done to all of those pupils who represented Shalva!
School/Club Links
Yavneh College PE Department continues to have strong links with Hertsmere Community Sports Development and local sports clubs.
The Zenith Trampolining satellite club continues to run weekly at Yavneh College with over 30 pupils attending, developing trampolining skills under the guidance of Zenith Trampolining coaches. Pupils are then offered the opportunity to attend Zenith trampolining sessions at their club in Potters Bar.
Similarly, the school has continued to develop a successful link with Herts Phoenix Athletics Club between March and July. The club coaches visit Yavneh College to run weekly Athletics sessions and offer the opportunity for pupils to further develop their skills and take part in competitions under the Herts Phoenix umbrella. The Saracens Sports Academy are also currently offering free Dace sessions on a Tuesday lunchtime.
Girls football at Yavneh College has benefited from sessions being delivered by Arsenal Ladies and Barnet FC. A group of Y7 girls will soon have the opportunity to attend coaching sessions run by Watford Ladies. All Y7 girls are welcome and should look out for further details on the PE noticeboards.
Pupils can find details of local clubs and opportunities on the Community Sports Clubs and Events Notice Board in the PE Department.
Competitive School Sport
The Yavneh College PE Department continues to provide opportunities for pupils to be involved in competitive sport at many levels and in several sports.
Yavneh College pupils attend regular sports events organised by Maccabi GB. Throughout the year, the pupils have competed against other local Jewish schools in football, netball, rounders, badminton, table tennis and basketball. The most impressive performances of 2016 came from the girls rounders’ teams who won the Maccabi schools competitions at all age groups.
Yavneh College is also fully committed to the Mid Herts School Sports Association competitions with other schools from Borehamwood, Welwyn and Potters Bar. The boys and girls have been taking part in the District Football League and Netball league respectively. There have also been several “B” team fixtures to help give increased opportunities for pupils to represent the school.
Further highlights of the school sporting year were………….
Watford and Hertsmere School Sports Partnership events
The girls and boys have attended the badminton and basketball Watford and Hertsmere school sports partnership competitions. These competitions are an opportunity to play against different schools who are outside of our district. The sports are often those where pupils have less experience than some of the sports that they may play more often.
GCSE PE & BTEC Sport
Aiming to follow in the footsteps of last year’s GCSE group who achieved outstanding results, the GCSE PE students have been busy recently completing their Analysis of Performance Assessments and Personal Exercise Programs. This has all been helped by the extra practical sessions, including Netball, Football, Handball and Fitness that have been run by the Yavneh PE Department. February will also see the addition of GCSE PE revision sessions.
The Yavneh PE Department is pleased to be offering BTEC Sport as a new option for study at Key Stage 4. This term the group have been busy working on their first units focussing on the attributes for successful sports leadership.
Sports Leadership
The Sports Leadership team is made up of pupils in Sports Leadership enrichments or pupils who have shown a particular interest during their sports leadership lessons. The Sports Leaders are currently busy preparing for the visit of the Hertsmere Primary Schools including Clore Shalom, Saffron Green, Kenilworth, Monksmead and Cowley Hill for the Watford and Hertsmere School Sports Partnership Sportshall Athletics. The Sports Leaders will be using their excellent planning, organisational and communication skills in order to assist with the running of this event and more throughout the year. Any other pupils who wish to volunteer for sports leadership activities should get more information from their PE teacher or the Sports Leadership notice board.
The Sky Sports Living for Sports Project has run for the second consecutive at Yavneh with GB International long jumper JJ Jegede spending a day with the Y9 Sports Leaders. The day involved pupils taking part in workshops and practical activities to develop in a range of key areas; mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers, planning for success. JJ also shared his inspirational story and answered questions with pupils during lunch time.
And Finally…
It is important to note that Yavneh College’s PE programme is not just geared towards school representation. All pupils are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular clubs before school, during lunchtime and after school, regardless of their ability. Details of the extra-curricular activities can be found on the PE Department notice boards in school and also on the school website and on the PE Department Twitter page @Yav_PE.
The Jewish Studies Department has recently undergone some leadership changes. Mrs H Simon has moved to the post of Head of Department and been replaced as Assistant Head of Department by Mr B Gordon.
It is good to see that solid progress has been made across the Key Stages since the beginning of the academic year. Within KS3 the effort of a number of pupils has been awarded with a move to a higher set with all classes maintaining a stimulating and challenging environment where Jewish learning in all its forms is being promoted.
We have made a really good start to introducing and embedding the new style syllabus and assessment for Year 10. The HPQ has introduced a number of topics beyond Judaism that the pupils are enjoying and they are also developing the specific study skills required for independent study.
Year 11 are working hard and have almost completed the RS GCSE specification ahead of their mocks. Many of them have been achieving above their expected grades in their End of Unit Assessments and we hope that they will perform at this higher level in their final exams.
Year 12 A Level classes are getting used to the demands of the new specification and have also made a promising start to the academic year.
Warm congratulations to all our graduates so far from Catch-Up Hebrew Reading and Writing, run as part of our enrichment programme. They are Tayla Barnett, Allie Bohm, Sofia Forman, Katie Goddard, Sam Joseph, Naomi Lewis, Layla Berman, Zara Collins, Emily Keen, Annabel Sinclair, Jamie Smokler, Ariella Morris, Naomi Sella, Mia Cohen, Adar Canning Elms, Romi Trup, Jesse Kettle, Isabella Apfel, Damon Waks, Grace Broadbent, Morgan Yanover, Jesse Feeney, Harry Tredler, Ethan Garcia, Brayden Fifer.
A very recent innovation, which is already proving hugely worthwhile and popular, is the Catch-Up Hebrew Reading & Writing helper scheme. Pupils from Y8 and Y9 BMT classes have started volunteering to assist the Year 7s and to boost their confidence with their Ivrit reading and script writing. Sincere thanks goes to the first tranche of Sam Cohen, Davina David, Dylan Keizner, Jake Landsberg, Toby Mandel, Ron Cohen, Benjamin Moont, Noah Arazi, Joshua Myers, Ben Stankler.
Always looking to make the pupil experience even better, we have instituted some changes to Year 7 Mincha. Twice a week, a group of pupils with less developed Hebrew reading skills have a separate Mincha at a pace that allows them to participate fully and to acquire background knowledge about the Tefillot (prayers).
In September 2016, Yavneh launched its first Adult Education event for parents which was arranged in advance of the High Holy Days. The sessions were delivered by our own dedicated Jewish Studies department. Parents had the choice of a wide range of relevant topics from text based subjects to philosophical discussions. Following on from the success of that evening, we offered a five-week Hebrew Reading Crash Course for parents. This ran during November – December last year. The Jewish Studies team is planning a further Adult Education evening pre-Pesach with a choice of two 45 minute lectures on a variety of subjects relating to the festival.
The success of the Jewish Studies department is due to the commitment of the staff working in partnership with you the parents to give your children the best possible Jewish education.

Today was a very special one for Yavneh College. We were honoured and privileged to welcome His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to the school this morning and have the opportunity to show him the best of what we do.
There were many special guests present including The Chief Rabbi and the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and they were all extremely impressed with everything they saw.
His Royal Highness was in his own words ‘deeply impressed’ by what he saw at Yavneh particularly, the work that our pupils do both inside and outside our community.

2016 marks ten years since the establishment of Yavneh College. These first 10 years have been a real success story with the school achieving so much in a relatively short space of time. Academically and communally, Yavneh pupils achieve much and we are looking forward to celebrating together as a community in the coming months.
Two special events will be taking place over the next 8 months, a Gala Dinner on 30th March 2017 and a Yavneh Fun Day on Sunday 10th September 2017.

Girls Netball
Netball at Yavneh has been extremely popular so far this school year, with big turn outs at practices for all year groups and additional matches added to the calendar in response to demand! Year 8 and 9 netball has been so well attended that there have been matches played against other schools for A, B and C teams!
Year 7 started their season well with a convincing win in their first game against Stanborough. Miss Penn was very impressed with the quality of netball and has high hopes for the team! Year 7 have also played a difficult game against Dame Alice Owens and have secured a second win against Immanuel.
Year 8 have improved their performance throughout the last term, showing grit and determination against difficult opposition. Amelia San has been awarded player of the match for the year 8B team on several occasions.
Year 9 have had an excellent season to date and have shown significant improvements since last year. They have been attending practice with the year 10 and 11 teams and have shown that they are capable of playing at a higher level. They have secured wins against Stanborough and SFO and were an excellent challenge when playing against Queenswood. The attacking duo of Aimee Summerfield and Danielle Gordon has been particularly strong, moving the ball around the court and Mia Herman has been strong in defence, making excellent tips to intercept the ball.
Year 10 and 11 have been playing consistently well all year and have had a good squad at training with lots of the year 11s also working on improving their umpiring. Year 11 are currently unbeaten and have played Chancellors, Owens and Bentlywood. Amelia Rubens and Eve Lewis have particularly stood out in the year 11 team for their attacking work and Jade Susman has improved significantly in recent months, showing that the time and effort she has applied outside of school has paid off. Year 10 have also had a successful season with some extremely skilful play from Beth Karbaron and Portia Nicholas Jago standing out.
Fixtures and practices will be on-going until the end of term for all year groups.
Girls Football
Football Club has been a popular choice for the year 7 and 8 girls this year despite some poor weather conditions at times. Year 7 in particular have enjoyed some excellent coaching from the Year 11 GCSE students who have led the sessions on a Monday lunchtime as part of their GCSE leadership assessment in Football. Ben Barres and Joe Salomon should be congratulated for their thorough planning and excellent delivery of the sessions, the boys have gone above and beyond what was expected of them.
The year 7, 8 & 9 teams have all attended the Mid-Herts District Tournaments held at Hertswood School with the year 7 team making it to the semi-finals but unfortunately losing on penalties. Sophie Collins stood out as Mr Layton’s player of the tournament.
Boys Football
The boy’s football fixtures are in full swing with all year groups (7-11) currently competing in the Mid Herts District League. The year 7 boys team have had excellent turnouts at lunchtime practice and have played in several A & B team fixtures so far this season. Performance highlights have been the teams’ victories against Sir Frederic Osborn and Immanuel College and the outstanding individual performances of Harry Tredler and Adar Canning Elms. Despite narrow defeats against Hertswood and Chancellors, spirits are high in the Year 8 team following recent victories against Onslow and Immanuel College. There has been an excellent commitment to lunchtime practice from many of the boys and outstanding performances in particular from Reuben Wapnick and Jude Lewis.
The Year 9’s suffered two defeats against previous winners Mount Grace and last years’ semi finalist Chancellors. Year 10 recovered from a defeat in their first match and while the Year 11’sbut produced a strong performance to take a victory against Onlsow. The Year 11’s were knocked out in the early stages of the Mid Herts District Tournament by Hertswood.
Fixtures will continue in the Spring following a break for rugby and Basketball fixtures in January and February.
Boys Rugby
The boys rugby season starts for Year 7 and Year 8 in January with lunchtime practices. All boys are welcome to attend, regardless of ability or experience. Fixtures are already scheduled for the end of February.
Boys Basketball
This year’s year 9 basketball fixtures are underway and they are competing in the Mid Herts District League, playing Stanborough, Sir Frederic Osborn, Hertswood and Onslow. The turnout at practices has been good and they have improved through the season. A highlight was a win and a draw in a district rally, where they narrowly missed on a semi-final place. In doing so they won against Onslow and drew with Sir Fredrics Osborn. One of the most consistent performers has been Jamie Gordon and in particular his much improved lay-up. In the New Year both year 7 and 8 will have their chance and play in the district Schools League
Maccabi Sports Competitions
The girls have only attended one Maccabi competition so far this year which was the Maccabi 5-aside football. The year 7 were the most successful, reaching the semi finals of the tournament. Special mention to Georgia Rosenberg in year 9 for her outstanding performance in goal. This was even commented on by the Maccabi referee. Well done to all girls who played.
Watford and Hertsmere School Sports Partnership events
The girls have attended the badminton and basketball Watford and Hertsmere school sports partnership competitions. These competitions are an opportunity to play against different schools who are outside of our district. The sports are often different and the girls attend with less experience than some of the sports they play more often.
Miss Penn took a team to the U14 badminton competition, where unfortunately we lost to strong opposition. Georgia Reback and Georgia Rosenberg stood out and show potential for the sport!
We had varied success at the basketball competition with the year 7 team winning several of their games. Zara Daniels stood out in this competition and showed that she had god ball control and speed to travel down the court, putting pressure on the opposition. In the year 9 competition, Danielle Gordon was the star player, showing determination, even against stronger teams.
Well done to all girls involved. Listen out for future competitions to take part in!

We would like welcome our new members of staff who joined us this September. We are sure that they will easily settle into life at Yavneh College and we wish them every success during their time with us. Congratulations to all the pupils who performed so well in their examinations this summer both at GCSE and at A Level. We would like to highlight those who performed so well in outperforming their own target grades by some distance. In addition, we would like to highlight the outstanding achievement of the Yavneh graduates who have gained a place to study at Oxford or Cambridge in 2016. The fact that 10% of graduates have gained an Oxbridge place is something of which we are extremely proud.
Holly Berman – English – Cambridge, Oliver Boyne – Engineering – Cambridge, Zoe Cohen – History – Cambridge, Ben Brown – Engineering – Oxford, Dina Gitlin-Leigh – History – Cambridge, Gideon Rudolph – Maths – Oxford, Adam Steinberg – Physics – Oxford, Josh Tray – Law – Oxford
We also welcome the arrival of 180 new Year 7 pupils to Yavneh College. On their recent trip to Phasels Wood in the summer, they were encouraged to work together, make new friends and develop new skills. Phasels Wood is a Scout run activity centre where pupils take part in activities such as climbing, zip wire and archery along with a host of team building activities. It was extremely heartening to see those pupils who at first were a little nervous about scaling a wall to say how much they wanted to do it again and again later on in the day. Pupils supported each other on activities when they could sense that somebody was struggling; this team work and care is one of the fundamental principles in how we do things at Yavneh in what we call the ‘Yavneh Way.’ The pupils have built on a very good start to the year at Phasels Wood and continue to impress with their work ethic and tenacity, something we hope continues for the remainder of their time at Yavneh College. One Year 7 pupil, Ella Obrart wrote, ‘Phasels Wood was so much fun, it was great for everyone. Between the teachers making bins out of cones, to walking away with no broken bones. We really enjoyed our time in the sun, now it’s finished and we look forward to what’s to come.’.
