ENGLISH – Trip to British Library – May 2018

Year 7 & 8 Trip to the British Library

Year 7 & 8 students who are gifted and talented in English had the fantastic opportunity to go to the British Library in Euston, London on Tuesday 24^th April 2018. The students had a tour of the Treasures Room, which included seeing the Magna Carta, a prayer book that could be worn on a necklace, the writing of Jane Austen and Beatles lyrics written on a napkin.

The students then had to create a piece of writing based on famous first lines of novels. The British Library team were impressed with the ideas and creativity of the writing which our students created.

Masie Gold in year 8 said: I really enjoyed this trip because I found out lots of information about the library and also enjoyed looking in the treasures gallery to see some books as old as from the 15^th century. I learnt a lot of new skills on the trip and was challenged by the activities.

Charlie, Mason and Adam in year 7 said: We were astounded by the vast collection of incredible exhibits that were on display. There were old books, sonnets and stories from the year 1000 and small books of prayer that could hang around your neck. The tour guides were brilliant and overall we had a great time.

Mrs Harris emailed to say: Thank you very much for organising the trip to the British Library, Joshua really enjoyed it and he seems to have got a lot out of the experience. He’s been telling us all about the Magna Carta and the golden Haggadah and he can’t wait to go there again!

I wandered lonely as a cloud…

Drifting off elegantly in the distance were little pieces of cotton puffed like fresh feather pillows. I casually strolled down a blanket of soft, vibrant and luscious lawn, treading carefully making sure not to march on any daisies. The daisies were solid silver with gold interiors. As I pondered around, I was stunned by the shear face of the crisp water that came cascading down from the waterfall above. There was a floral scent that lingered in the air.

Art AGT Workshop Write Up Year 12 – May 2018

The Yavneh College A-level art class were recently visited by Holly, a tutor from the University of Creative Arts, who lead a workshop, allowing us to explore a more creative and free method of converting collage into a 3D product. Each of us were given an A2 sheet of paper which we decorated with a variety of textures and media, such as different papers, fabrics and materials. After this, we drew outlines of different body shapes on the paper and cut them out, creating a collection of uniquely designed body parts. Lastly, we were given the challenge to make an accessory out of these, using wire, string and adhesives. Once we had finished our final products, we were able to wear them. The outcomes varied from belts, crowns, masks, ties and even bags.

This experience was valuable to all of us as it allowed us to become more expressive and messy, with an activity which didn’t have to be so precise and controlled, which we are normally used to. Although it was not relevant to all of our individual topics, the session allowed us to explored materials we wouldn’t usually use and learn new techniques, including image transfer with tape. These ideas will be able to be carried forward with us and may be useful when trying new experiments and methods in our work. The whole class had a great time and many of us are excited to attend the open day workshops which were suggested to us.

Art AGT Workshop Write Up Year 10 – May 2018

UCA Session

The UCA session was for year 10 students taking part in Art GCSE. A teacher from the University for the Creative Arts came into run a creative school workshop.

This consisted of a 2-hour workshop where we made Fanzines which are our own booklets made from A3 pieces of paper that were folded down to create a booklet with 8 pages. On these pages we were asked to use our own creative media techniques to fill these pages with a range of mixed media such as magazine collages, coloured ink as well as different types of fabric.

We felt this was a very productive workshop as we were allowed to express our creativity in a range of different ideas and media’s which helped to find the designs that best expressed ourselves. This was a great platform to convey the theme of design that we were most interested in as the range of different designs produced and media’s used varied throughout the class which helped show our individuality.
