Business/Economics – National Young Enterprise Competition

November 21, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

November: Business/Economics – National Young Enterprise Competition

After last year’s successful completion of the Hertsmere Community Dragons Apprentice Challenge, this year we have decided to enter a Young Enterprise team into the National Young Enterprise competition. This year’s team is made up of aspiring and talented entrepreneurs from Business BTEC and Economics A Level.

With thanks to Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey for his support in funding the team, the students have now elected their Directors and are currently carrying out their market research into the product that they are creating to sell. Over the next few weeks you will see some marketing material for the product that they are making and hopefully many of you will invest in the company either through purchasing shares or by purchasing the end result.

The Young Enterprise team in action:

French – La Famille Bélier – 8 Nov 2017

November 21, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

FRENCH DEPARTMENT

A group of enthusiastic Francophiles gathered on Wednesday 8 th November to share the showing of a La Famille Bélier, a modern film set in rural France. In the Bélier family, sixteen-year-old Paula is an indispensable interpreter for her deaf parents and brother on a daily basis, especially in the running of the family farm. One day, a music teacher discovers her gift for singing and encourages Paula to audition for the prestigious Maîtrise de Radio France music college in Paris, which will secure her a good career and a college degree. However, this decision would mean leaving her family and taking her first steps towards adulthood. The film was shown in French with English subtitles and pupils enjoyed identifying vocabulary already familiar to them (through their GCSE French studies) while learning more about the French culture. The lunch time viewing was positively received by all spectators and the atmosphere was completed with bowls of popcorn which rendered the experience even more authentic! The event was so successful that it will be run the following week as well in order to finish the film. Quotes from the group: ‘I love this film. What a great way to spend my lunch time! I cannot wait until next week to see what happens’.

History – Year 12 Trip To Soho Theatre – 7 Nov 2017

Year 12 trip to Soho Theatre

Russian history can be summed up by the phrase ‘and then it got worse.’ Stalin’s Russia really was “the worse.” Year 12 History students were taken to see the insane and hilarious events that led to and followed Stalin’s death to show them just how mad Stalin’s Soviet Russia really was. Laughing all the way through, on Tuesday 7th November twelve A Level History students went to see The Death of Stalin at Soho Theatre in Leicester Square with Mr Dobrik. The students learnt in an engaging way just how this chapter of Russian history ended. Early 20th century Russian History (1894-1924) is the second unit studied in year 12.

History – Year 11 “Escape Room” – 16 Nov 2017

November 21, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

YEAR 11 ESCAPE ROOM

On Thursday 16th November, as part of the History department’s focus week a small group of year 11 students were sent back in time to an 18th century prison. Facing the death penalty for a crime they did not commit, they had to use their knowledge of their most recent GCSE unit of Crime and Punishment in Britain from 1000CE to the modern day, as well as their mental agility to piece together a wide variety of clues to enable them to find the code that would allow them to escape from their prison cell. Students were able to use their skills to effectively recall key events and details of their Crime & Punishment unit, providing them with a memorable and useful way of revising and recapping their learning.

History – Ajex Parade – 19 Nov 2017

November 21, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

AJEX CEREMONY AND PARADE

On Sunday 19th November a number of Sixth Form students participated in the annual Ajex ceremony. The parade started at 13.30 at the Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. The students held a banner identifying the school and marched in honour and memory of all Jewish men and women who have served this country, and of the victims of the Holocaust. The parade also serves as an important reminder of the extraordinary service given to this country by British Jews since the 1750s and we are proud that Yavneh College students were a part of this event.

Cambridge University Liaison Officer Visit

November 14, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

On Monday 6th November, Rebecca Bradley, the School Liaison Officer from Cambridge University visited Yavneh College to speak to a select group of year 11 students and parents about the prospect of studying at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The talk included details of what makes both universities so unique as well as looking at the incredible academic opportunities open to its undergraduates. In addition, Rebecca explained to students the rigours of the application process as well as the sorts of extra (“super”) curricular activities they need to be involving themselves in over the next few years in order to give them the best possible chance of a successful application.

The talk was a really useful experience for students (and parents) and will have plenty of food for thought when thinking about the important choices for the futures. I am also really hopeful that hearing from Rebecca inspired our most able students to motivate them to achieve as highly as possible this year in order to give them a real chance at successfully applying to Oxford and Cambridge next year.
