COMPUTING – “Hackathon” – Sunday 3rd December

December 12, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

Four students from Yavneh College are well on their way to being technology entrepreneurs after developing a winning app to improve education during a 14-hour hackathon in Finchley.

Jack Perchick, Iftach Sella, Ben Stankler, Izzy Sinclair formed a four-teen team called Better Learning and pitched their personalised education app to a range of judges including directors at Google and high-tech investors, who were left impressed.

In total 50 children of different faiths attended the first-of-its-kind event from schools including Hasmonean, Etz Chaim and St Albans School, with nine teams comprising up to six children of different ages.

The hackathon – which was media sponsored by Jewish News – saw teams develop a Virtual Reality (VR) app, interactive online textbooks and computer games designed to motivate students to learn, all of which left organisers from Acorn Aspirations and Jewish Interactive in awe.

Computing and Maths – “ENIGMA” – 7th December

December 12, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

On 7th December Yavneh College welcomed Dr James Grime to give a presentation and workshops to 150 pupils identified as being gifted at mathematics and/or computing. James is a mathematician with a personal passion for maths communication and the promotion of mathematics in schools and to the general public. He can be mostly found doing exactly that, either touring the world giving public talks, or on YouTube.

James has a PhD in mathematics and his academic interests include group theory (the mathematics of symmetry) and combinatorics (the mathematics of networks and solving problems with diagrams and pictures). James also has a keen interest in cryptography (the mathematics of codes and secret messages), probability (games, gambling and predicting the future) and number theory (the properties of numbers).

The presentation was fascinating giving a both history of codes and code breaking and a mathematical perspective. it was especially interesting to learn that there were break throughs in both writing and breaking codes as early as 900 AD. The presentation ended with a demonstration of how an enigma machine worked and how the team led by Alan Turing was able to break the code. This was made all the more special as James brought with him an authentic enigma machine.

During the rest of the day the pupils attended workshops in groups of 30, during the work shops they were able to have a go at code breaking and also ask James about his work as a mathematician, giving a very different perspective to just learning mathematics in the classroom.

ART – Trip to Tate Modern – 21st November

December 6, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

On Tuesday 21st November year 10 GCSE artists went on a trip to Tate Modern.

The purpose of the trip was to introduce students to a wide variety of art and inspire their own art practice.  The trip was a real success as students’ feedback was exceptionally positive, especially about their realization of the enormous variety of art and a much greater understanding of the academic importance of the context of each piece of art.  This was evident in the enthusiasm in which they completed the ‘treasure hunt’ task Ms Jacobs set them – finding different artworks in the many galleries across the site – and the studies they did of their chosen artists’ work.  All students benefited greatly from the visit, especially our AG&T and SEN students.

Art – Oil Painting Master Class (5th December)

December 6, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

During lunchtime on 5th December Ms Jacobs ran an oil painting master class for eleven of our most talented year 11 artists.  The students thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt how to paint human eyes and flesh using blended oil paint.  They were very excited that this could be included in their sketchbooks to show a wider breadth of technical understanding using a new media.

Business/Economics – Stand It: A Young Enterprise Company – 1st December

December 6, 2017/in School News/by yavneh

Since the previous update of our progress in the Young Enterprise competition we have been exceptionally busy and diligent- buying, promoting, and in particular, selling. Our team of keen entrepreneurs have dedicated themselves to this worthwhile extra-curricular activity and have consistently directed three meetings per week in order to succeed in this venture.

After a period of decision making- and many, many different company names- the verdict was made to register as ‘Stand It’ and to sell pocket-sized mobile technology stands. From this point, our logo was then designed on Adobe Photoshop to achieve a high standard, professional finish; this design has since been entered into a national contest in which our logo (as pictured below) will compete against every registered team.

Furthermore, we have obtained a sustainable amount of start-up capital by the means of selling shares to friends, family, and staff of Yavneh College- we used to this to acquire our initial batch of three-hundred units, varying in colour.

Stand-It1

After liaising with the Senior Leadership Team, our company gained the opportunity to have a stand in the foyer of the school during a lunchtime, giving the team valuable experience in selling our products to a segment of our target market: youths. In the week prior to the opening of trade, we created promotional posters which outlined the details of the stand as well as our pricing strategy- they were then distributed throughout the school, focusing on the areas which are visited frequently.

On the 1st December, we held the stall during lunchtime, boasting the versatility of our product via the means of pitching and complementing this with attention-grabbing music. For our first day of sales, the team exceeded all expectations, and sold in excess of one hundred and twenty give units, covering all of our registration fees and the costs involved in procuring the stock.

In the forthcoming weeks, we are selling our product at multiple fairs, including the Sinai Jewish Primary School Chanukah Fair and Tesco Extra (Watford) Young Enterprise Fair, on Sunday the 17th of December; expect to see a supplementary update outlining our future accomplishments presently.

I would like to thank all those who have already contributed to our venture through purchasing the product or investing in shares. Moreover, the hard work of Mrs. Davis and Mr. Pieters must be recognised for their persistent support to myself and the team.

If you wish to purchase any stands- or for any further information- please contact us via e-mail: stand.it@mail.com. Alternatively, our business activities can be followed through Instagram- @Stand_It_YE and Facebook.com/Stand.It.YE

Department Focus – Enterprise and Digital Technology

December 1, 2017/in General, School News/by yavneh

From January 2018 the departments of Vocational Education, Economics, Computing and Digital media are combining to form one larger Faculty of Enterprise and Digital Technology. It is exciting to put together what will be a department filled with enrichment opportunities and one that builds on the achievements of the last few years.

This year the department has been joined by Ms Hood who is teaching Business, and Mr Lightman who is our new media teacher. Yavneh College’s vocational subjects are developing well with the summer of 2017 results being very impressive, and we were very proud of our first cohort of BTEC students. The year 13 students gained, on average at least one and a half grades above their targets, with the majority of double award students achieving at least D*D and several gaining D*D*.  Out of the three students who worked hard to achieve the triple award both Ben Rosen and Ilan Shiradski achieved D*D*D* which was a phenomenal achievement.  The level 2 BTEC students did just as well with a 98% pass rate, the majority of students also gaining D* and D grade passes. This summer will see the first cohort of Digital media students finish their level 2 course, and so far the results look to be very promising with 98% of students passing their examined unit last summer. This year we have also started teaching the level 3 media award, having equipped the department with all the new technology needed.

Computer Science

The last year has illustrated the industriousness and involvement of the students in many different activities. The Computing Department was lucky enough to be granted some funding to buy some mBots, little robots which can be programmed by the pupils to navigate mazes and avoid obstacles.  We hope that this will add a new element to learning to code in Key Stage 3 and we aim to run a competition in class in order to challenge the pupils to think of new and creative ways to get the robots to carry out tasks.

Twitter Coding Trips

This year we are going to send 15 more Year 8 girls to Twitter HQ in London as part of an interfaith project which aims to get girls coding and to break down barriers across faiths.  Last year girls met up with their Muslim and Christian counterparts to build websites and experience the inspirational environment enjoyed by those who work for Twitter.

Enterprise

Last year a group of students entered the Hertsmere Community Dragons Apprentice Challenge. This meant that a team of students were mentored by a business adviser and a charity fundraiser to raise as much money as possible for a chosen charity. Our team, named ‘Elegantly Enterprising’ raised nearly £1200 for the charity ‘Carers in Herts’ through numerous activities including non-school shoes day, a car wash and a carer’s day where they helped staff and sold various goods to students in order to raise the profile of the charity. The team won the regional finals and presented their cheque to Linda Cudmore of Carers in Herts in a school assembly. Jonathan Lipitch, the business advisor was also present at the awards ceremony. Both Jonathan and Linda gave a huge amount of support to the students who gained a lot from the programme.

Young Enterprise

This year we have decided to enter a Young Enterprise team into the National Young Enterprise competition. With thanks to Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey for his support in funding the team, the students have now elected their Directors and are currently carrying out their market research into the product that they are creating to sell. Over the next few weeks you will see some marketing material for the product that they are making and hopefully many of you will invest in the company either through purchasing shares or by purchasing the end result.
